Maintaining the historic brick sidewalks, streets and gas lamps is the responsibility of the Department of Public Works, but getting it done requires vigilance and effort on the part of all concerned residents. Please use the following numbers to request repairs:

STREET SWEEPING
Street Sweeping is conducted on Beacon Hill from March 1 to December 31.  Cars will be ticketed and towed if not removed between 8 am and 12 noon on the scheduled day. Below is a link to the street sweeping schedule, but always be sure to check the posted signs when parking.All parking spaces on the odd side of the street will be swept on the 1st and 3rd weeks of the month, and all even side of the street spaces will be swept on the 2nd and 4th weeks of the month. Street sweeping does not occur on city holidays or on the 5th Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday of the month.

ICE & SNOW

Walking around Beacon Hill after a measurable snowfall is one of the great pleasures of living here. The white caps on the gas lamps and hydrants, the frosting on the sills and windowpanes, and the smell of fires from neighbors’ hearths will transport you to a simpler time – but only if residents follow city rules and regulations to make the pathways safe and passable.  Please observe the following regulations:

• Clearing sidewalks of ice and snow is the responsibility of the property owner and failure to do so is a fineable offense. It is illegal to shovel snow into city streets. To report a violation, call ISD Site Cleanliness and Code Enforcement at 617-635-4896.

• Icicles hanging from downspouts and gutters can be very dangerous. Property owners should maintain their gutters to prevent accumulation. To request the Boston City Hall to cordon off a dangerous location, call 617-635-4500.

• Trash can be buried by large snow falls, so follow trash regulations scrupulously and make sure your bags are strong, securely tied and readily visible to the haulers.
  
  To avoid parking tickets, clear the snow from your car window so that your resident sticker is easily visible.

• When the City declares a snow emergency, additional parking restrictions will go into effect, and stopping, standing and parking on certain main streets (Beacon Street, Cambridge Street from Staniford to West Cedar streets, and Charles Street from Beacon Street to Charles Circle) will be forbidden until the emergency is lifted.
  
  Special rates ($2 per 24-hour period) are available at the Boston Common Garage during snow emergencies. Cars must be removed by 9 a.m. the morning after the snow emergency ends.
