Zoning
Our unique neighborhood enjoys world renown for its historic buildings and was designated an historic district in 1955 from Beacon to Cambridge Streets and Bowdoin Street to Storrow Drive. This designation, as well as city zoning and licensing regulations, place limits on how property on Beacon Hill can be altered and/or used without express permission from one or more agencies. While any decision to make significant changes to a building exterior or interior will most likely require a variance, the BHCA provides guidelines to help you determine when you will need approval and from whom.

All exterior changes to buildings on the Hill are governed by the Beacon Hill Architecture Commission. Please visit the Architecture section of our website for more information

For detailed information regarding building permits, construction parking permits, and other guidelines please visit our Zoning & Licensing bulletin board for current information.
